Old State Capitol Grounds

In Abraham Lincoln's day, the capitol area was a traditional gathering place for townspeople. When the Civil War ended, the square filled up with celebrating crowds. Days later, Lincoln's assassination drew them back in collective mourning.

Today, visitors sometimes enjoy special events on the grounds. Shown here is a summer festival, featuring music by the popular 33rd Illinois Volunteer Regimental Band.
