The girl who provided household help to the Lincolns
had a bedroom on the northeast corner of the second floor.
In an 1848 letter to his wife, Abraham Lincoln urged her to hire a
household worker to help with their sons. He said, "By the way,
you do not intend to do without a girl, because the one you had
has left you? Get another as soon as you can to take charge
of the dear codgers."
