2. Cooper Shop and Home
When the flatboat Abraham Lincoln helped pilot became stranded near the village, he walked up to Henry Onstot's Cooper Shop (left), where he borrowed an auger. He bored a hole in the bow of the boat, let the water run out, and plugged the hole, helping to free the boat.Onstot, who also was a native Kentuckian, lived in New Salem during the entire time Lincoln stayed in the village. Three years after Lincoln left, Onstot re-assembled his house and shop in nearby Petersburg.
