This historic Greek Revival building dominates the
downtown square in Springfield. It was associated with Abraham Lincoln as
early as 1837, when the cornerstone was laid. As a member of the
Illinois General Assembly, Lincoln helped move the state capital
from Vandalia to Springfield in that year.
Before Lincoln became President, he was a frequent visitor
to this building. He tried cases before the Illinois Supreme Court,
did research in the libraries, and gave his famous "House Divided"
speech in Representatives Hall.
