Beardstown, Illinois |
Although not part of the old Eighth Judicial Circuit,
Beardstown, Illinois boasts an original building where Abraham Lincoln practiced law.
You'll find it on the town square about 45 miles northwest of Springfield.
Lincoln's association with the town goes back to 1832, when he piloted a
Texas-bound family and their household goods on a raft down the Sangamon River
to Beardstown. The so-called "Almanac Trial" courthouse, built in 1844, served Cass
County nearly 30 years before nearby Virginia stole the county seat.
