Abraham Lincoln also frequented this adjacent room, sometimes returning
after dinner to socialize. William Herndon recalled, "Lincoln
would come into the room in a good humor, in one of his best moods,
speak kindly and pleasantly to all, and say: 'You men sitting here
so mum puts me in mind of a story.'
"The lawyers would say: 'What is the story, Lincoln? Come, tell it,'
and tell it he would, and that story would suggest another, and
so he would break up all reading, abstract, and brief business."
