The sculpture recalls Lincoln's presence at the Soldiers' Home, where
he and his family stayed during three summers of his presidency. The
family lived in the secluded location while Lincoln commuted three miles
to the White House, often on horseback.
The statue grouping was designed by sculptor Ivan Schwartz of
New York, who also produced a Lincoln statue for the Gettysburg National
Military Park in Pennsylvania.
