Representatives Hall

Few rooms recall Abraham Lincoln's presence as much as this one, which was occupied by the House of Representatives. In 1841 Lincoln served the last of four terms here, sitting close to the photo foreground.

In 1858 he began his race for the U.S. Senate here and lost it to Douglas in 1859. In May 1860 Republicans gathered here when Lincoln received the presidential nomination and again in November when he won the election. After his assassination in 1865, Lincoln's friends and neighbors paid their last respects in this room as they passed by his coffin.
